Hemp Oil Benefits: Just the Facts Please

Benefits of Hemp Oil

While hemp oil benefits are numerous, many are still uneducated and therefore unaware of all the wonderful healing properties contained within the hemp plant.

Still, it can be said that the United States is on the verge of a cannabis revolution.

That seems to be true owing to the popularity of CBD products and CBD oil throughout the country. But long before the legality of these products, there were hemp oil and hemp seeds available in our local health food stores.

Although hemp oil comes from the cannabis plant, it is legal to use because it contains insignificant amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the compound that produces the high generally associated with weed.

In fact, hemp oil serves as a great source of nutrients and has been extensively used in Eastern cultures for many years.

The reason people have turned a blind eye to the benefits of hemp oil is that hemp seed is a part of marijuana (cannabis plant).

But, since the seed does not cause any kind of psychotropic reaction like marijuana, we can benefit from it. We will take a look at the benefits of hemp oil and help you determine whether you should use it.

What is Hemp Oil

hemp oil

Hemp oil is harvested from hemp seeds. Although it comes from the cannabis plant, it contains minute amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Both marijuana and hemp come from the same plant species; the quantity of THC is what makes the two different from one another.

When the amount of THC is less than 0.3%, it is considered hemp. When it is more than 0.3%, it is considered marijuana. This essentially means that hemp oil can be used without feeling the ‘high’ effect afterward.

Hemp oil serves as a source of some important nutrients – including omega-3 and omega-6, proteins and terpenes. It doesn’t contain CBD, so the major appeal of hemp oil is the beneficial nutrients and its fatty acid profile.

There is some confusion about the compounds found in hemp oil. Some products that are labeled as ‘hemp oil’ include cannabinoids such as CBD.

But if you want to increase your intake of nutrients and healthy fats, you should go for the products that are labeled as ‘hemp seed oil.’

Benefits of Hemp Oil

While there are numerous hemp oil benefits, here is a list of our personal favorites.

Hemp Oil for Eczema

Some reports have suggested that hemp oil is effective in the treatment of eczema. The fatty acids found in hemp oil act as a moisturizer and help relieve the symptoms of eczema. Using hemp oil three times a day by applying it on all affected areas of the skin may prove to be beneficial.

Using hemp oil continuously for 20 weeks was found to relieve the symptoms of dermatitis. This is especially true when itching is associated with this condition. Hemp oil can also improve shingles – a type of rash.

It has been found effective in reducing inflammation and can protect nerve cells.

Consuming hemp oil may even help reduce pain caused by the inflammation that shingles.

It should be mentioned that each case of shingles might be unique, which is why we recommend talking to your doctor and taking their advice on whether hemp oil should be used for treating the condition you have.

Hemp oil can be used for preventing sunburns. Its SPF rating is 6, which should be suitable for most individuals in mild conditions. Adding zinc oxide to hemp oil can increase its SPF rating.

Hemp Oil for Skin

Another hemp oil benefit that helps people get healthy and beautiful skin. It can act as a moisturizing agent, preventing the skin from becoming excessively dry during the winter season.

Hemp oil keeps skin hydrated, soft, and refreshed. Take a bath and then apply hemp oil all over your body. Don’t worry, it won’t clog your pores.

You should be able to see the difference in a couple of days.

It contains about 60% of linoleic acid, which regulates the production of sebum. When your diet lacks linoleic acid, sebum can clog your pores, giving rise to acne lesions, blackheads or whiteheads.

You can wash your face, dry it, and apply the hemp oil to all affected areas.

Hemp Oil for Seizures

Research has found promising effects of hemp oil for seizure disorders.

In a research article, the author explained that three trials that were conducted found promising results for people with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome – both conditions are characterized by recurrent seizures.

In these trials, it was found that CBD (a chemical compound in hemp) is effective in reducing the seizures experienced by people with Dravet syndrome.

CBD also reduced the number of drop seizures that individuals with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome faced.

Drop seizures are defined as seizures in which the whole body or part of it becomes limp. Thus, if the seizure occurs while the individual is standing, they typically fall to the ground.

Another study was carried out to understand how patients suffering from epilepsy in Utah were benefiting from hemp extract.

Out of the 46 participants that responded to a questionnaire, 41 said that they were using hemp extract. A majority of them took the extract two times a day for a period of 14 months.

More than 68 percent reported that they experienced seizures less frequently and/or the seizures they experienced were less severe after they had started taking a hemp extract.

The same number of respondents said that they experienced other benefits too – like better sleep, feeling more alert, and improved mood.

However, some participants of the study revealed that they experienced adverse effects after consuming hemp extract.

For instance, some said that the frequency of their seizures increased.

Others reported that they had fatigue and/or diarrhea after using the hemp extract, with 2% reporting serious side effects related to increased seizures and mouth swelling.

Researchers warned that it is difficult to determine exactly how these individuals were affected by hemp extract as about 20 percent of the users weren’t sure of the concentration of hemp in the products they were using.

Therefore, it isn’t possible to know whether they took therapeutic doses.

Hemp Oil for Hair

Hemp oil contains lipids that add shine and moisture to a person’s hair. It can strengthen fragile strands and make hair thicker.

Hemp can also promote the growth of new hair. Applying the oil on the scalp regularly may reduce scalp problems. It can reduce dandruff and relieve dryness and itchiness.

Hemp oil also improves the circulation of blood to the scalp and may prove to be effective in the treatment of scalp psoriasis.

Hemp Oil for Cooking

Hemp oil can be added to several recipes and smoothies as it has a nutty flavor. However, it shouldn’t be heated to over 300°F, so you should not use it for cooking. Instead, it can be added to spreads, veggie dishes, dips, and salads to enhance the flavor of said dishes.

Hemp Oil for Pain

This is personal for me because I use hemp oil to help combat my chronic pain.

Hemp oil can be used as a natural pain reliever, especially if the pain results from inflammation as noted earlier.

Those who don’t want to take prescription or over-the-counter pain medications could turn to hemp oil for relief.

In a 2018 study, it was noted that CBD – one of the compounds in hemp oil – and other cannabinoids are effective in the treatment of several types of pain.

It should be noted that the research has been done mostly on lab rats.

While the research suggests that CBD could be helpful in the treatment of pain, more human research studies are required to give more credibility to the results.

Hemp Oil for Pets

Hemp oil can be beneficial for pets, especially dogs.

Again, this is personal for me because I give hemp oil to one of my older dogs and have noticed a big difference. She has more energy, more pep-in-her-step, a better appetite, and seems happier.

Dogs can synthesize GLA (gamma-linoleic acid) from linoleic acid, but they can still be deficient in it. GLA deficiencies may lead to digestive issues, premature aging, arthritis, allergies, diabetes, cancer, and skin problems.

This means that dogs must get enough of GLA. Hemp oil can deliver GLA to dogs.

Long-term chronic inflammation in dogs can lead to several health problems, including cancer, kidney disease, and heart disease.

Hemp oil contains omega-3, which can control chronic inflammation and lower inflammation in the body. Omega-3 fats are also beneficial for the eyes, joints, bone, heart, skin, brain, and immune system of dogs.

Hemp Oil for Seniors

Hemp oil is an excellent resource for the elderly as it fights inflammation and promotes heart health.

Hemp oil is rich in GLA, which is an omega-6 fatty acid that fights inflammation and boosts immunity. GLA promotes the production of prostaglandins – hormone-like chemicals required to control inflammation.

Hemp oil is also a great source of anti-inflammatory compounds that could help relieve arthritic symptoms. It has also been found effective in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Certain compounds found in hemp oil can lower cholesterol levels and protect the heart.

This oil contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the optimal ratio – 1:3. This ratio has been found to be more beneficial for heart health than higher ratios of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

In an animal study, it was found that hemp oil is effective in reducing cholesterol absorption. The fatty acids in the oil can reduce unhealthy fats in the human body, and this improves heart health.

Hemp Oil for Pregnancy

One great benefit of hemp oil is for pregnant mothers as it contains omega-3 fatty acids.

An American study has shown that adequate intake of these fatty acids is essential during pregnancy because they are the building blocks of the retina and fetal brain.

They can also prevent perinatal depression.

Oils that contain omega-3 can also help in preventing preterm delivery and promote an easier birth.

However, some sources have highlighted the potential side effects of using hemp oil during pregnancy. Therefore, pregnant women should consult with their doctor before using hemp oil.

Hemp Oil Questions and Answers

hemp oil questions and answers

Q. Is Hemp Oil Addictive?

Since hemp oil may be sold and consumed freely, it is clear that it is free from the danger of addiction. Just because hemp oil is directly made from hemp doesn’t automatically qualify it as a drug. Also, there are hemp oil products which are essentially provided with THC. However, even then there isn’t any risk of addiction as THC in hemp oil is present in insignificant quantity – less than 0.3%.

There is strict regulation with hemp oil, so the quantity of THC in these products must be less than 0.3%. Anyone who tries to produce drug intoxication by consuming a high amount of hemp oil will be disappointed.

This is because it isn’t possible to get intoxicated even with significantly high consumption of hemp oil, but side effects can occur due to high consumption.

Q. What are the Side Effects of Hemp Oil?

Almost everything used in a diet for preventing or managing health issues has some adverse effects, and hemp seed oil is no exception. However, it is important to note that the side effects of this oil are rare. Hemp oil can cause the following negative side effects.

Digestive Problems

This is mostly true with hemp seeds. The high fiber content of hemp seeds may lead to diarrhea, gas, or constipation.

Can Interact with Blood Thinners

Hemp oil may slow down blood clotting and can even lead to bleeding. Hence, people who are taking blood thinners should not use it. Those who are expected to undergo surgery within a month should also avoid using hemp oil.

Euphoria or Hallucination

People who consume hemp oil might experience euphoria or hallucinations due to high quantities of THC. To avoid this, check the product levels for the quantity of THC and only buy hemp oil from trusted brands.

Q. How to Use Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil is found in many different forms, and it can be consumed orally, applied sublingually or topically, or even smoked via vaporization. Sublingual application and vaporization of hemp oil allow for a faster onset-of-action of the ingredients, whereas edible products and pills can take about 30 to 60 minutes to take effect. Topical hemp oil may be directly applied to areas of inflammation or pain.

Q. How Does Hemp Oil Make You Feel?

Hemp oil may enhance the natural ability of your body to manage stress.

The extract is a source of phytocannabinoids – natural substances that have been found to influence cannabinoid receptors that enhance the internal balancing system of the body to keep multiple systems in equilibrium.

Taking hemp oil isn’t supposed to be an escape from all the stresses of life.

Taking it will not make the stresses go away. But, by raising the threshold of your body for stress, hemp oil can produce a feeling of calm and relaxation.

Q. Is there Any Substitute for Hemp Oil?

The only good substitute for hemp oil is olive oil. These two oils can be found in their unprocessed state so you can get a good amount of nutrients from them.

Q. What is the Difference Between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil and hemp oil are two different things, but they are often confused with being one and the same. The major difference between CBD oil and hemp oil is that CBD contains high levels of THC while hemp is very low in THC (less than 0.3%).

Both hemp oil and CBD oil are trendy ingredients used in skincare products. Hemp oil is known to prevent pores from clogging, be anti-inflammatory, and provide moisturization to keep the skin feeling supple and looking beautiful.

CBD is known to be a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and helps in healing sensitive skin, eczema, rashes, acne, and psoriasis. It contains a large number of antioxidants.

Some brands are intentionally mixing the two terms – CBD oil and hemp oil. Since hemp oil and CBD oil are from the same cannabis family, they are often advertised as the same thing. Why would any brand want to do this?

The answer is simple – CBD oil is more expensive, so consumers will be willing to pay more for it. It is easy for a manufacturer to add hemp oil to their product and highlight the word “cannabis” to make people think that they are getting a CBD product when in fact the product doesn’t contain any CBD. So consumers would be paying a premium for hemp oil.

Q. Is Hemp Oil Legal?

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration published a report that stipulated that marijuana and hemp are two separate parts of the cannabis plant species. The focus of the U.S. government falls on the parts of the cannabis plant that are sources of THC as it can cause people to get high. Hemp contains a small amount of THC and doesn’t get people high, so it isn’t a problem.

Manufacturers who market hemp oil ensure that there isn’t any THC. Hence, if you want to make sure that you are buying or using legal hemp oil, check the ingredients on the product label. If there is less than 0.3% THC, you’re good to go. If not, buy hemp oil from a different manufacturer.

Q. Where to Buy Hemp Oil?

When buying hemp oil, always choose a reputable manufacturer that is clear about their standards and practices.

They should answer any questions that you might have and provide documentation to support the claims they are making about their products. Some companies even offer a money-back guarantee.

Increased focus on CBD, marijuana, and hemp has led to several questionable firms offering products that don’t live up to the manufacturer’s claims and are mislabeled. Steer clear of companies that make exaggerated claims.

Canada Hemp Foods and Nutiva are two reputable brands of hemp oil, and you can buy from them without worrying about any kind of problem.

Final Thoughts

It does not contain CBD and is now legal in many States.

It won’t cause anyone to feel high or test positive on a drug test. Generally, hemp oil is well-tolerated, but it could lead to digestive side effects like nausea, diarrhea, and cramps in some people.

Hemp oil also has favorable effects on the hair and skin, and it contributes to heart health and reduces inflammation, which makes it a great option for the elderly.

Hemp oil isn’t just beneficial for human beings but also helps lower inflammation and controls chronic inflammation in dogs. It is also beneficial for the eyes, joints, bone, heart, skin, brain, and immune system of canines.

In a nutshell, when used properly, the benefits of hemp oil will be a healthy addition to your skincare and wellness routine.
