Wanted: a new generation of lifesavers&#60;br /&#62;

(ARA) - When she spotted the dying man, Desiree Rossi took action&#60;br /&#62;
when no one else would. Although a crowd of adults surrounded the&#60;br /&#62;
collapsed body near Desiree's bus stop in Pawtucket, R.I., they were&#60;br /&#62;
frozen - but not her. Rossi ordered an adult to call 9-1-1 and then&#60;br /&#62;
she started CPR. She was 17.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Paramedics arrived and took the man to a local hospital where he was&#60;br /&#62;
stabilized.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;I couldn't believe that no one stepped in - that it took a 17-year-&#60;br /&#62;
old kid to be the one to take action,&#38;quot; says Rossi, who had been&#60;br /&#62;
trained in CPR just six months earlier at her high school.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Rossi's story illustrates a huge obstacle to overcoming the dismal&#60;br /&#62;
survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest: lack of bystander action.&#60;br /&#62;
Less than 8 percent of victims who suffer cardiac arrest at home, at&#60;br /&#62;
work or in other public places survive. And fewer than one-third of&#60;br /&#62;
cardiac arrest victims gets CPR from a bystander.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Getting people to act when someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest is&#60;br /&#62;
critical to the victim's survival,&#38;quot; says Michael Sayre, M.D.,&#60;br /&#62;
chairman of the American Heart Association's Emergency Cardiovascular&#60;br /&#62;
Care Committee. &#38;quot;Time is not on the victim's side. Four to six&#60;br /&#62;
minutes is the window of opportunity for someone to act before it is&#60;br /&#62;
too late.&#38;quot;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The American Heart Association wants more people to take action and&#60;br /&#62;
help cardiac arrest victims. The association is helping create the&#60;br /&#62;
next generation of lifesavers at Bethebeat.heart.org, where teens can&#60;br /&#62;
learn the basic skills of CPR and how to use an AED.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Teens can learn how to save lives and play an important role by&#60;br /&#62;
setting an example for their friends, families and neighbors about&#60;br /&#62;
the need for CPR and AED training,&#38;quot; Sayre says. &#38;quot;They can also&#60;br /&#62;
encourage the adults in their lives to learn learn CPR.&#38;quot;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Be the Beat features games, educational videos and interactive&#60;br /&#62;
quizzes. Songs with 100 beats per minute (the correct rate for chest&#60;br /&#62;
compressions when administering CPR) are also available on the&#60;br /&#62;
website.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
And the association recently simplified the steps of CPR with Hands-&#60;br /&#62;
Only CPR. When a teen or an adult suddenly collapses, there are two&#60;br /&#62;
easy steps: (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast on the center&#60;br /&#62;
of the chest until professional help or an AED arrives.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Getting formal CPR training is also easier than ever. Visit&#60;br /&#62;
americanheart.org/CPR to find a class in your neck of the woods, or&#60;br /&#62;
order a self-directed CPR training kit at cpranytime.org to learn at&#60;br /&#62;
your own pace.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The American Heart Association wants 1 million people, including&#60;br /&#62;
teens, to learn about CPR during CPR Week June 1-7. Learn more at&#60;br /&#62;

Beat the heat: Tips for keeping your family safe and healthy&#60;br /&#62;
this summer&#60;br /&#62;

(ARA) - The smell of the barbecue grill, the sounds of children&#60;br /&#62;
playing and the feel of warm sun on the skin are all signs of summer.&#60;br /&#62;
With increased outdoor activities, there also comes a list of&#60;br /&#62;
precautions you should take to keep your family safe and healthy.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;We know women are usually the caretakers of the family,&#38;quot; says&#60;br /&#62;
Elizabeth Battaglino Cahill, a registered nurse and executive&#60;br /&#62;
director of HealthyWomen. &#38;quot;Summer brings lots of great opportunities&#60;br /&#62;
for family fun, but also requires some special planning to keep kids&#60;br /&#62;
and adults safe and healthy in the sun and heat.&#38;quot;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Limit sun exposure&#60;br /&#62;
Because exposure to the sun causes most of the skin changes&#60;br /&#62;
associated with aging, protecting the skin from the sun is the single&#60;br /&#62;
most important skin care practice you can adopt and impart to your&#60;br /&#62;
children. Significant exposure to the sun will wrinkle and dry the&#60;br /&#62;
skin. Uneven pigmentation - from freckles to small or large brown&#60;br /&#62;
spots - is another side effect of frequent sunning.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The most serious consequence of sun exposure is skin cancer. Most&#60;br /&#62;
sun damage occurs before age 18, but skin cancer can take up to 20 or&#60;br /&#62;
more years to develop. Children who experience just a few serious&#60;br /&#62;
sunburns are believed to have an increased risk of developing skin&#60;br /&#62;
cancer later in life. Protect children by applying sunscreen at least&#60;br /&#62;
an hour before heading outside and frequently reapplying sunscreen&#60;br /&#62;
with an SPF of at least 15. Also have them play in the shade and wear&#60;br /&#62;
protective clothing. Babies younger than 6 months should never be in&#60;br /&#62;
direct sunlight and should always wear a hat and clothing that&#60;br /&#62;
protects them from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Keep an eye on your vision health&#60;br /&#62;
Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat when you're in the sun. These&#60;br /&#62;
two simple steps can reduce your exposure to eye-damaging UV rays up&#60;br /&#62;
to 18-fold. And, if you wear contacts, ask your eye care specialist&#60;br /&#62;
about contact lenses with UV protection. Don't forget your children&#60;br /&#62;
and their eyes. If you are going to be in the sun, make sure your&#60;br /&#62;
children are wearing hats that provide coverage. Use your stroller&#60;br /&#62;
hood when out for a walk and pay attention to the sun's direction.&#60;br /&#62;
When out for a walk with your stroller, try to walk so that the sun&#60;br /&#62;
hits your back. You may also want to consider purchasing children's&#60;br /&#62;
sunglasses.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Practice water safety&#60;br /&#62;
Before you start splashing, remember safety first. Take the time to&#60;br /&#62;
enroll your kids in swim instruction classes, and teach your children&#60;br /&#62;
to take precautions before diving into the water. Make sure to read&#60;br /&#62;
the safety and warning labels on all children's toys, inner tubes and&#60;br /&#62;
water wings so that you understand their safety capabilities. And&#60;br /&#62;
remember to reapply sunscreen every few hours after being in the&#60;br /&#62;
water.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Avoid foods exposed to excess heat&#60;br /&#62;
During the summer months, many people enjoy going for a picnic.&#60;br /&#62;
Before packing your basket this summer, think about how long your&#60;br /&#62;
food will be exposed to the outdoors. Avoid packing meat, dairy and&#60;br /&#62;
egg products that may spoil if not kept cold. If you decide to bring&#60;br /&#62;
these types of food products, pack them separate from each other in a&#60;br /&#62;
cooler, and keep the ice in a sealed container to avoid a soggy&#60;br /&#62;
sandwich.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Stay hydrated&#60;br /&#62;
Increase fluid intake as appropriate based on the weather. High&#60;br /&#62;
temperatures or humidity outside, heated indoor air and high&#60;br /&#62;
altitudes all cause you to need more fluids.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
When exercising, drink one cup of fluids every 15 minutes, advises&#60;br /&#62;
Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger, a fellow of the American College of Sports&#60;br /&#62;
Medicine and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at Boise&#60;br /&#62;
State University.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Add more for big events. If you're going to be in a race or charity&#60;br /&#62;
walk, make sure you drink enough to be well hydrated the day before,&#60;br /&#62;
Hoeger adds. Also, drink a glass of fluid, such as water or a sports&#60;br /&#62;
drink, an hour before the event.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Watch out for overheating in vehicles&#60;br /&#62;
Even on a relatively mild day, the temperature inside your vehicle&#60;br /&#62;
can quickly escalate. These temperatures can put both children and&#60;br /&#62;
pets at risk for heat stroke, dehydration and even death. Never leave&#60;br /&#62;
your child or pet unattended inside your car, even to run a quick&#60;br /&#62;
errand.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;

    &#60;B&#62; 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1 cup extra virgin olive oil&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 1/2 cup SPLENDA&#38;reg; No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1/2 tablespoon honey&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 1/2 teaspoon saffron&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 4 cloves garlic, minced&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 1 teaspoon dried basil&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1 teaspoon dried thyme&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1 teaspoon salt&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley&#60;br /&#62;
    * 1 pinch dried sage&#60;br /&#62;

Directions&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
1. Place chicken in a shallow dish. In a medium bowl, mix&#60;br /&#62;
together the olive oil, SPLENDA&#38;reg; Granulated Sweetener, honey,&#60;br /&#62;
saffron, garlic, basil, thyme, cayenne pepper, salt, oregano,&#60;br /&#62;
parsley, and sage. Pour the mixture over the chicken. Cover, and&#60;br /&#62;
marinate 20 to 25 minutes in the refrigerator.&#60;br /&#62;
2. Preheat the grill for medium heat.&#60;br /&#62;
3. Lightly oil the grill grate. Discard marinade, and place&#60;br /&#62;
chicken on the grill. Cook for 10 minutes on each side, or until&#60;br /&#62;
exterior is charred and juices run clear.&#60;br /&#62;

Grilled Italian Sausage with Peppers &#38;amp; Onions&#60;br /&#62;
Prep: 10 min, Cook: 30 min.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 3 large green bell peppers, trimmed and quartered &#60;br /&#62;
      lengthwise&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1 large red onion, quartered lengthwise and separated &#60;br /&#62;
      into layers&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 3 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1-1/2 tsp. red wine vinegar&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 1/2 tsp. dried oregano, crumbled&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1/2 tsp. salt&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;B&#62; 1/8 tsp. black pepper&#60;br /&#62;
    &#60;/B&#62; 1 lb. Italian sausage&#60;br /&#62;
    * 2 metal skewers&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Prepare grill for cooking over medium-hot charcoal&#60;br /&#62;
(moderate heat for gas). (If using a charcoal grill, open&#60;br /&#62;
vents on bottom of grill, then light charcoal. When&#60;br /&#62;
Charcoal turns grayish white (about 15 minutes from&#60;br /&#62;
lighting), hold your hand 5 inches above grill rack to&#60;br /&#62;
determine heat for charcoal as follows: Hot: When you can&#60;br /&#62;
hold your hand there for 1 to 2 seconds; Medium-hot: 3 to 4&#60;br /&#62;
seconds; Low: 5 to 6 seconds. If using a gas grill, preheat&#60;br /&#62;
burners on high, covered, 10 minutes, then, if necessary,&#60;br /&#62;
reduce to heat specified in recipe.)&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Toss peppers and onion with 1/3 of the oil. Grill on&#60;br /&#62;
lightly oiled grill sheet set directly on perforated grill&#60;br /&#62;
sheet, with grill covered only if using a gas grill,&#60;br /&#62;
turning occasionally, until slightly softened and charred,&#60;br /&#62;
9 to 15 minutes (onion will cook faster), transferring to a&#60;br /&#62;
bowl as cooked.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Add vinegar, oregano, salt, pepper, and remaining oil to&#60;br /&#62;
peppers and onion, tossing to coat. Let stand 10 minutes to&#60;br /&#62;
allow flavors to develop.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
While vegetables stand, run skewers crisscrossed&#60;br /&#62;
horizontally through sausage coil, securing ends. Grill&#60;br /&#62;
directly over medium-hot charcoal (moderate heat for gas)&#60;br /&#62;
on lightly oiled grill rack, covered only if using a gas&#60;br /&#62;
grill, turning over once, until cooked through, 10 to 12&#60;br /&#62;
minutes total. (Thicker sausage may take longer.)&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Transfer vegetables to a platter and top with sausage.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;

(ARA) - Food can make you healthier -- if you make good&#60;br /&#62;
choices. It can seem hard to make healthy food choices,&#60;br /&#62;
particularly if you are on a budget and short on time. But&#60;br /&#62;
there are some simple steps you can take to help you and&#60;br /&#62;
your family eat healthier. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Build a Healthier Plate &#60;br /&#62;
Use a grocery list when shopping for food to help you&#60;br /&#62;
choose more fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Buy&#60;br /&#62;
leaner meats (such as chicken, turkey, and lean cuts of&#60;br /&#62;
pork or beef such as sirloin or chuck roast) and lower fat&#60;br /&#62;
dairy products like low-fat or non-fat (skim) milk and&#60;br /&#62;
yogurt. Buy whole grain breads and cereals. Save money by&#60;br /&#62;
buying less soda, sweets and chips or other snack foods.&#60;br /&#62;
Remember that special &#38;quot;dietetic&#38;quot; or &#38;quot;diabetic&#38;quot; foods often&#60;br /&#62;
cost extra money and may not be much healthier than simply&#60;br /&#62;
following the suggestions given here. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Also, watch the size of your portions. You may find that&#60;br /&#62;
you are used to eating portions that count as two or more&#60;br /&#62;
servings. It helps to be able to &#38;quot;eyeball&#38;quot; portion sizes.&#60;br /&#62;
Here are some guides: &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Meat, fish, and poultry: 3 ounces, or about the size of&#60;br /&#62;
the palm of your hand or a deck of cards. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; Cheese: 1 ounce, or about the size of your thumb. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Fresh vegetables, milk and yogurt: 1 cup, or about the&#60;br /&#62;
size of a tennis ball. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; Bread: one slice. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Easy Ways to Make Smart Food Choices &#60;br /&#62;
There are lots of ways you can make smart choices about&#60;br /&#62;
your own and your family's eating habits. According to Ann&#60;br /&#62;
Albright, PhD, RD, president, Health Care and Education of&#60;br /&#62;
the American Diabetes Association, &#38;quot;One of the most&#60;br /&#62;
important things you can do to start eating more&#60;br /&#62;
healthfully is to pick one or two not-so great items you&#60;br /&#62;
eat frequently and find a more nutritious substitution for&#60;br /&#62;
those. If you start with foods you eat more frequently,&#60;br /&#62;
then the change will pack a bigger punch.&#38;quot; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Shop Smart &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Set aside some time to plan your weekly meals. It may&#60;br /&#62;
seem like a hassle at first, but having a plan (and writing&#60;br /&#62;
your grocery list with it in mind) can save you time,&#60;br /&#62;
stress, and a lot of extra trips to the store. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; Stock your pantry with plenty of healthy basics,&#60;br /&#62;
including brown rice, whole grain pasta, crackers and&#60;br /&#62;
cereals. Remember that fresh fruits and vegetables are&#60;br /&#62;
usually healthier than canned or frozen, but it is better&#60;br /&#62;
to have canned or frozen fruits or vegetables than none at&#60;br /&#62;
all! When you run out, put the items on your grocery list&#60;br /&#62;
so you'll always have them on hand. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Shop only from your grocery list. Avoid aisles that&#60;br /&#62;
contain foods high in calories but low in vitamins and&#60;br /&#62;
minerals such as candy, cookies, chips and sodas. Also&#60;br /&#62;
avoid buying items promoted at the front of the store, on&#60;br /&#62;
the &#38;quot;end-cap&#38;quot; displays at the end of each aisle, or at the&#60;br /&#62;
cash register. These foods are usually low in nutrition.&#60;br /&#62;
Never shop when you are hungry and might be tempted by less&#60;br /&#62;
healthy food. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Eat Smart &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; Keep fruits and vegetables washed and cut up for easy&#60;br /&#62;
snacking and steaming. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Canned and frozen vegetables and fruits are healthful,&#60;br /&#62;
quick and convenient. To cut down on the sodium in&#60;br /&#62;
vegetables, drain and rinse canned vegetables with water&#60;br /&#62;
before heating them You can do the same to cut down on the&#60;br /&#62;
added sugar in canned fruits. Better yet, buy them packed&#60;br /&#62;
in juice. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; Learn how to &#38;quot;Create Your Plate.&#38;quot; When serving a meal,&#60;br /&#62;
draw an imaginary line down the middle of your plate and&#60;br /&#62;
another one across. Fill half of your plate with leafy&#60;br /&#62;
greens and other vegetables. Fill one quarter with grains,&#60;br /&#62;
like whole grain bread or pasta or brown rice. Then fill&#60;br /&#62;
the last quarter with lean protein such as chicken or fish. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Start meals with a salad or a broth or tomato-based soup&#60;br /&#62;
with lots of vegetables. This helps you eat more good-for-&#60;br /&#62;
you veggies while filling you up before you get to the&#60;br /&#62;
higher fat and calorie courses. &#60;br /&#62;
Make healthy snack foods easy to find in your kitchen. For&#60;br /&#62;
example, when you get home from work or school, put some&#60;br /&#62;
fresh carrots, grapes, or pretzels out on the counter&#60;br /&#62;
instead of having bags of chips out. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; In restaurants, ask if meats can be grilled rather than&#60;br /&#62;
fried, and request sauces and dressings on the side.&#60;br /&#62;
Remember to choose fruit, salad, or other vegetables as&#60;br /&#62;
side items, rather than French fries. Order a salad or soup&#60;br /&#62;
to start and then share an entr&#38;eacute;e. Save money, and lots of&#60;br /&#62;
calories, by skipping dessert. &#60;br /&#62;

Low Calorie Baked Chicken Kiev&#60;br /&#62;

Prep: 15 min, Cook: 25 min.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1/4 cup low calorie margarine&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 2 Tbs. fresh parsley, minced&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1/4 tsp. dried rosemary&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 1/8 tsp. garlic powder&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, halved&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 2 Tbs. plus 2 tsp. skim milk&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 3-1/2 Tbs. fine breadcrumbs&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 3/4 lemon, cut into wedges&#60;br /&#62;
* round wooden toothpick&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Combine margarine, parsley, rosemary, garlic and pepper to&#60;br /&#62;
taste in a small mixing bowl. Shape margarine mixture into&#60;br /&#62;
4 2 inch long sticks; freeze until firm. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Place each chicken breast half between 2 sheets of waxed&#60;br /&#62;
paper and flatten to 1/4 inch thickness with a meat mallet&#60;br /&#62;
or rolling pin. Place 1 margarine stick in the center of&#60;br /&#62;
each chicken breast; fold ends over margarine and roll up,&#60;br /&#62;
beginning with long side. Secure each end with wooden&#60;br /&#62;
toothpicks. Dip chicken rolls into the milk and coat&#60;br /&#62;
thoroughly with breadcrumbs. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Bake at 400&#38;deg;F for 25 minutes until browned. Arrange&#60;br /&#62;
chicken on a serving platter, spoon juices from pan over&#60;br /&#62;
the top, garnish with lemon wedges and serve.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Per serving: calories 184, fat 7.1g, 35% calories from&#60;br /&#62;
fat, cholesterol 53mg, protein 22.5g, carbohydrates 7.0g,&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;/B&#62; 1-1/2 lbs. canned black beans, rinsed and drained&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 2 Tbs. chopped pimento&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 2 Tbs. parsley&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1 Tbs. plus 1 tsp. olive oil&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 2 Tbs. lemon juice&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1-1/2 Tbs. water&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 1/4 tsp. dry mustard&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1 clove garlic, crushed&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 4 pita pocket breads, warm and cut in half&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Combine beans, pimento and parsley in a salad bowl. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Combine remaining ingredients, except pitas, in a jar with&#60;br /&#62;
a tight-fitting lid. Add salt and pepper to taste. Shake&#60;br /&#62;
vigorously. Pour dressing over beans. Set aside 30 minutes.&#60;br /&#62;
Divide equally and stuff into pita breads.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Per serving: calories 366, fat 5.8g, 14% calories from&#60;br /&#62;

Parents: Tips on Caring for Cuts and Scrapes&#60;br /&#62;

(ARA) - It?s something every parent has experienced. It?s&#60;br /&#62;
a beautiful day and your children are outside having fun at&#60;br /&#62;
a playground, backyard barbecue or party when an accidental&#60;br /&#62;
scrape or minor cut turns the laughter into tears. Once a&#60;br /&#62;
child is reassured that he/she will be OK, here?s what you&#60;br /&#62;
need to know to promote proper healing so that everyone can&#60;br /&#62;
get back to enjoying the sun:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
1) The first thing to remember is that any time there is a&#60;br /&#62;
break in the skin, there is danger of infection, so make&#60;br /&#62;
sure to wash your hands properly before caring for the&#60;br /&#62;
wound. And although you might do it with the best&#60;br /&#62;
intentions, do not blow on the wound to comfort your child&#60;br /&#62;
and ?make the pain go away,? as it introduces germs to the&#60;br /&#62;
area.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
2) Most minor wounds usually stop bleeding on their own,&#60;br /&#62;
but if they don't, apply direct pressure to the wound with&#60;br /&#62;
a non-stick pad or gauze pad until it stops.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
3) Once the bleeding has stopped, clean the wound using&#60;br /&#62;
lukewarm, running water to wash away surface particles and&#60;br /&#62;
dirt. If dirt or debris remains embedded in the wound after&#60;br /&#62;
washing with warm running water, seek medical attention.&#60;br /&#62;
Don't attempt to remove embedded particles by yourself.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
4) Cleaning the area around the wound with soap and water&#60;br /&#62;
reduces the risk of infection. Try to keep soap out of the&#60;br /&#62;
wound itself because soap can cause irritation and make&#60;br /&#62;
sure to always wipe away from the wound to avoid&#60;br /&#62;
contamination.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
5) Most minor cuts and scrapes will heal just fine without&#60;br /&#62;
antibiotic ointment, but applying a product such as&#60;br /&#62;
SilvaSorb Gel can speed healing and has been shown to be&#60;br /&#62;
effective against MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant&#60;br /&#62;
organisms.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
6) Although some people may say to let the wound&#60;br /&#62;
?breathe,? the most current medical advice is to cover it&#60;br /&#62;
up with an adhesive bandage. Curad makes a unique island&#60;br /&#62;
pad, where the adhesive surrounds the non-stick pad, that&#60;br /&#62;
helps seal out dirt and germs. They also make special&#60;br /&#62;
bandages that are designed to fit kid-sized wounds and are&#60;br /&#62;

7) Finally, be sure to cleanse the wound and change the&#60;br /&#62;
bandage at least daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
In general, you should consult your doctor for all cuts&#60;br /&#62;
that are deep, large or continue bleeding -- they may&#60;br /&#62;
require stitches. Also see your doctor if the wound does&#60;br /&#62;
not heal in one week or less or if signs of infection&#60;br /&#62;
appear.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The more you and your children know about the proper way&#60;br /&#62;
to treat the cuts and scratches that accompany childhood&#60;br /&#62;
activity, the easier it will be to care for them and reduce&#60;br /&#62;
scarring. When in doubt about the severity of a wound,&#60;br /&#62;
whether stitches are necessary, or any time the child&#60;br /&#62;
continues to complain of pain or discomfort, consult your&#60;br /&#62;
pediatrician.&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;/B&#62; 2 Tbs. grated Parmesan cheese&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;/B&#62; 1/2 tsp. lemon pepper&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1/2 tsp. paprika&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 1 egg white, lightly beaten&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1/4 cup skim milk&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 1 lb. whitefish fillets&#60;br /&#62;
* 3 Tbs. unsalted butter, melted&#60;br /&#62;

Prepare broiler. Combine first 5 ingredients in a shallow&#60;br /&#62;
dish. Combine egg white and milk in another small dish.&#60;br /&#62;
Coat fish with dry mixture, then egg mixture, then again in&#60;br /&#62;
dry mixture. Place on rack of broiler pan that has been&#60;br /&#62;
lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Drizzle with&#60;br /&#62;
butter. Broil 4 inches from heat 4-5 minutes each side, or&#60;br /&#62;
until golden.&#60;br /&#62;

Three Great Workouts You Can Do Anytime, Anyplace&#60;br /&#62;

(ARA) - With the cost of everything so high these days,&#60;br /&#62;
people are looking for ways to trim their budgets. Among&#60;br /&#62;
the most obvious places to cut back, eliminating that&#60;br /&#62;
morning cup of coffee, bringing a lunch from home instead&#60;br /&#62;
of dining out and canceling those services you can really&#60;br /&#62;
do without - like cable TV and that gym membership you&#60;br /&#62;
don't really use much anyway. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
That's not to say you shouldn't stay active, however.&#60;br /&#62;
Numerous studies have shown that regular exercise is a&#60;br /&#62;
critical part of staying healthy. According to the Centers&#60;br /&#62;
for Disease Control (CDC), regular exercise helps people&#60;br /&#62;
maintain a healthy weight and delay or prevent the onset of&#60;br /&#62;
diabetes and heart problems. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Regular activity is so important, in fact, that the&#60;br /&#62;
Federal Government recommends American adults get at least&#60;br /&#62;
30 minutes of exercise five times a week. But that doesn't&#60;br /&#62;
necessarily mean you have to head down to the gym, which&#60;br /&#62;
can be more of a chore than a fun activity, not to mention&#60;br /&#62;
expensive. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Here are some ideas for getting that 30 minute workout&#60;br /&#62;
anytime, anyplace: &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
1. Most employers offer an hour long lunch break and two&#60;br /&#62;
15-minute breaks throughout the day. Use some of that time&#60;br /&#62;
to get up and get moving. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
If you work in a tall building with lots of floors, use&#60;br /&#62;
your break time to go up and down the stairs. If stair&#60;br /&#62;
climbing is not an option, walk around the building at a&#60;br /&#62;
brisk pace a couple of times a day, stopping occasionally&#60;br /&#62;
to stretch. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
2. If you're a stay-at-home mom or dad, turn the baby&#60;br /&#62;
stroller into work-out equipment. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Head on down to the park or just around the block with&#60;br /&#62;
baby once or twice a day and as you move, use the stroller&#60;br /&#62;
as a piece of work-out equipment. You can jog behind it,&#60;br /&#62;
incorporate walking lunges and use bands for resistance&#60;br /&#62;
training. Not only will you get the benefit of exercise,&#60;br /&#62;
your baby will love it. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
3. Take up sports hula hooping. &#60;br /&#62;
Ten minutes worth of vigorously wiggling your hips and&#60;br /&#62;
moving around can burn off 110 calories, which is about as&#60;br /&#62;
much as you'd burn if jogging or running an 8-minute mile.&#60;br /&#62;
But burning calories quickly isn't the only benefit the&#60;br /&#62;
activity offers. It also promotes correct body alignment&#60;br /&#62;
from the circular motions and proper posture in the upper&#60;br /&#62;
body. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Substitute that light, plastic hula hoop your kids play&#60;br /&#62;

3) Grasp the hoop and keep it in a horizontal position&#60;br /&#62;
before swinging out. Do not position the hoop at a tilt. &#60;br /&#62;

4) Horizontally swing out the hoop against your waist,&#60;br /&#62;
fast and powerfully. Move your waist immediately. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
5) Move your waist in a circular motion, all around&#60;br /&#62;
pressing against the hoop. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
6) Keep your motion fast enough to match the circulation&#60;br /&#62;
speed of the hoop for it to stay up on your waist. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;

Saving Your Own Life for Less Than $1 a Day&#60;br /&#62;

(ARA) - How much would you be willing to pay to avoid having your&#60;br /&#62;
life cut short by a terrible illness? Most people would say,&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Anything!&#38;quot; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Jeff Bucher of Fond du Lac, Wis., believes the $1 a day he began&#60;br /&#62;
spending a little over a year ago saved his life. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Bucher's narrow escape began in November of 2006, shortly after his&#60;br /&#62;
41st birthday. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;I realized I was huffing and puffing every time I went up the&#60;br /&#62;
stairs,&#38;quot; Bucher says. &#38;quot;Finally, I decided enough was enough. It was&#60;br /&#62;
time for me to join a gym and get in shape.&#38;quot; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Bucher found the help he needed at an Anytime Fitness club near his&#60;br /&#62;
office - and exercising quickly became a habit. The fastest-growing&#60;br /&#62;
fitness club chain in America, known for its 24-hour gyms in small&#60;br /&#62;
towns all over the country, offered precisely the amenities Bucher&#60;br /&#62;
was looking for. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;The gym was quick and convenient for me,&#38;quot; he says. &#38;quot;It had all&#60;br /&#62;
sorts of free weights and treadmills, as well as elliptical and&#60;br /&#62;
exercise machines, and dues were very affordable. After years of&#60;br /&#62;
doing nothing, exercising just felt good. I found myself thinking&#60;br /&#62;
about it all the time.&#38;quot; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Weight loss helped detect cancer &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
In less than a year, Bucher lost 40 pounds of fat and gained 10&#60;br /&#62;
pounds of muscle -- and because he also acquired a new awareness of&#60;br /&#62;
his body, he noticed an unusual growth in his pelvic region. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;My doctor diagnosed me with follicular lymphoma and said I was&#60;br /&#62;
lucky,&#38;quot; Bucher recalls. &#38;quot;Most people with my type of cancer don't&#60;br /&#62;
realize they have it until it's stage three or four. By then, their&#60;br /&#62;
prognosis is not good. My cancer was caught during stage one.&#38;quot; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Bucher immediately began radiation treatments and within five weeks&#60;br /&#62;
was cancer free. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;This case is a dramatic example of how becoming physically active&#60;br /&#62;
can save your life. But for most people, exercise is a great way to&#60;br /&#62;
prevent problems from cropping up in the first place,&#38;quot; says Dr. Marc&#60;br /&#62;
Manley, vice president and medical director for population health at&#60;br /&#62;
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Being physically fit helped me endure the side effects of my&#60;br /&#62;
treatment,&#38;quot; Bucher says. &#38;quot;Now, more than ever, I'm determined to stay&#60;br /&#62;
in shape, so that I'll notice any changes right away if the cancer&#60;br /&#62;
returns.&#38;quot; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Many insurance companies now offer their members an incentive for&#60;br /&#62;
living healthy lifestyles. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, for&#60;br /&#62;
example, reimburses $20 of the monthly membership dues for members&#60;br /&#62;
who work out at a qualified gym at least 12 times a month. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;The health benefits of physical activity are well-documented.&#60;br /&#62;
People who exercise are more likely to maintain a lower weight, and&#60;br /&#62;
our research shows they have lower health care costs than those who&#60;br /&#62;
don't exercise regularly. So, from a business standpoint, it only&#60;br /&#62;
makes sense to encourage people to exercise,&#38;quot; says Dr. Manley. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
According to the American Heart Association, regular physical&#60;br /&#62;
activity has many health benefits. Working out regularly can: &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Help to maintain a healthy weight; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; Reduce the risk of dying prematurely from heart disease and other&#60;br /&#62;
conditions; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Reduce the risk of developing diabetes; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; Reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; Reduce blood pressure in people who already have high blood&#60;br /&#62;
pressure; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; Reduce the risk of developing colon and breast cancer. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;I can't say enough about the importance of physical activity.&#60;br /&#62;
People need to realize it's like the fountain of youth,&#38;quot; says Dr.&#60;br /&#62;
Manley. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Bucher is a true believer in that concept. &#38;quot;As soon as doctors told&#60;br /&#62;
me it was okay for me to return to the gym, I couldn't wait to get in&#60;br /&#62;
there and do some bench presses and lat pulls -- anything to release&#60;br /&#62;
some endorphins. I just wanted to beat up the cancer.&#38;quot; &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Exercising is the least expensive thing you can do to improve the&#60;br /&#62;
quality of your own life,&#38;quot; says Mark Daly, Anytime Fitness' national&#60;br /&#62;
media director. &#38;quot;Our clubs don't have pools, racquetball courts, or&#60;br /&#62;
saunas, but we do feature all the top-notch exercise equipment most&#60;br /&#62;
people need. At Anytime Fitness, we're all about providing convenient&#60;br /&#62;
and affordable fitness options for busy people who just want to get&#60;br /&#62;

As for Jeff Bucher, he says his medical scare reaffirmed for him&#60;br /&#62;
what's really important in life - his family and his health. That's&#60;br /&#62;

include his wife and their four daughters. These days, it's not&#60;br /&#62;
uncommon to see the entire Bucher family working out side-by-side on&#60;br /&#62;
elliptical machines. &#60;br /&#62;

Founded in 2002, Anytime Fitness now has nearly 800 clubs in 45&#60;br /&#62;
states. Monthly membership fees vary from club to club, but the fees&#60;br /&#62;
at many Anytime Fitness clubs equate to less than $1 a day - even&#60;br /&#62;
less when you factor in insurance reimbursements. Based on their&#60;br /&#62;
current growth rate, Daly expects Anytime Fitness to open its 1,000th&#60;br /&#62;

found U.S. adults are more afraid of being in a car&#60;br /&#62;
accident than experiencing a heart attack (25 percent vs.&#60;br /&#62;
16 percent). This is surprising since heart disease, the&#60;br /&#62;
nation's number one killer, claims one life every 35&#60;br /&#62;
seconds -- more than 912,000 lives annually (American Heart&#60;br /&#62;
Association) -- and car accidents claim significantly less&#60;br /&#62;
lives each year -- 43,000. These numbers show that living a&#60;br /&#62;
heart-healthy lifestyle should be just as important as&#60;br /&#62;
using a seatbelt. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
A proactive approach to maintaining a healthy heart is&#60;br /&#62;
especially important during the holidays. Studies show that&#60;br /&#62;
December and January have the highest rate of heart disease-&#60;br /&#62;
related deaths than any other time of year. Dr. Joseph&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;B&#62; 1 lb. shrimp, peeled, deveined&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 2 cups tomatoes, chopped&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1 lb. canned Great Northern beans, or navy beans,&#60;br /&#62;
rinsed, drained&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 1/2 tsp. dried marjoram&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1/2 tsp. dried basil leaves&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 1/2 tsp. dried rosemary leaves&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 2/3 cup low sodium chicken broth&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 2 tsp. cornstarch&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;B&#62; 1/2 lb. spinach fettuccine, cooked, hot&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/B&#62; 2 Tbs. grated Parmesan cheese, or fat-free grated Parmesan&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Cook asparagus and garlic in oil and margarine in large&#60;br /&#62;
skillet over medium heat 1-2 minutes. Add shrimp and cook&#60;br /&#62;
until pink, 2-3 minutes. Add tomatoes, beans, and herbs;&#60;br /&#62;
cook, covered, until tomatoes are wilted, 2-3 minutes. Mix&#60;br /&#62;
chicken broth and cornstarch, stir into skillet. Cook over&#60;br /&#62;
medium heat until thickened, stirring frequently. Season to&#60;br /&#62;
taste with salt and pepper. Serve over fettuccine and&#60;br /&#62;
sprinkle with cheese. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Variation: Substitute 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken&#60;br /&#62;
breast for the shrimp. Cut the chicken into 3/4 inch&#60;br /&#62;
pieces; cook chicken in oil and margarine in large skillet&#60;br /&#62;
over medium heat 3-4 minutes. Add asparagus and garlic;&#60;br /&#62;
cook until chicken is no longer pink in the center, 2-3&#60;br /&#62;
minutes. Complete recipe as above. &#60;br /&#62;
